Master Poetry Workshop Comes to Portland
Saturday, March 14

When Robert Bly visited Portland, he read his own poetry, and also poems by a younger poet he admired named Jay Leeming. Leeming's poetry has been hailed not only by Bly, but by Li-Young Lee, Naomi Shihab Nye, and Garrison Keller, who read Leeming's "Man Writes Poem" on the air. His book "Dynamite On A China Plate" (The Backwaters Press) was The Reader's Choice Award winner in 2003, and he is popular in England.
Leeming will be in Portland Saturday, March 14, to teach a master poetry class in Portland from 10 am to 4 pm. He plans on reading poems together with students by poets such as Pablo Neruda, Rilke and Emily Dickinson, then leading them in writing projects. Participants in the workshop should bring a notebook and something to write
with. He plans to focus on metaphor and revision, beginning with the Welsh myth of Taliesen, moving on to Neruda and Tomas Transtromer, then focusing on translations of poems by Rilke, Tu Fu, and the Italian poet Eugenio Montale. If time and number of students allow, there will be a chance to share work with each other.
The cost of the workshop is $60, payable in cash, USPS Money Order, or certified check. Lunch is on your own from 12:30 to 1:30.The workshop is a good way to get a jump start on National Poetry Month. Leeming's down-to-earth humor will make this event productive and memorable.

Poets in high school are welcome, too.
